Kuala Lumpur is a great transit city in South East Asia to layover in when you’re travelling to other locations. A hub for technology, shopping, culture, and food, KL suits all of your needs and you can get practically anything you want before launching on to your next destination. Here are some budget hotels in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre that are perfect for a short layover in KL that won’t break the bank.
The J Hotel by Dorsett

Surrounded by more prestigious hotel names, such as The Ritz-Carlton, Banyan Tree, and Pullman to name just a few, the J-Hotel by Dorsett is a budget hotel in Kuala Lumpur perfect for anyone flying into the city for a short layover.
The hotel has only been open a month at the time of writing (February 2020) and was a great hotel option for our 24-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur. It’s located just a 5-minute walk from Bukit Bintang, as well as our favourite mamak (mamak means local Malaysian restaurant).
The street to walk to reach the J Hotel by Dorsett can be a little dark and eerie at night but there is a complimentary shuttle bus that takes hotel guests to Pavilion. The WiFi was weak but the cosy room was clean and comfortable.
Stayed February 2020.
Meliá Kuala Lumpur

The Meliá Kuala Lumpur is a hotel that came to our hour of need when we arrived in to KL on an overnight bus from Singapore. They offered us amazing hospitality service by taking us in at 5am in the morning but not charging us for that night, and sent maintenance to our room to try and fix our luggage.
Located in city centre just opposite the LRT, the humongous shopping mall Berjaya Times Square and behind the technology hub, Low Yat Plaza, The Meliá Kuala Lumpur is a budget hotel that is perfect for a short layover.
The room we had was spacious, modern and clean. The city centre hotel is only a 5-minut walk from Bukit Bintang and we were able to shop to our heart’s content during our 48 layover in Kuala Lumpur.
Stayed April 2019.
